Extending the cycle network in West Cumbria

One of the culverts on the Workington to Maryport stretch of railway that was filled in several years ago has been excavated recently by Cumbria County Council. Work is currently in hand to deapen the culvert by underpinning and reinforsing the butresses. This culvert is located between the seashore and the main road connecting Maryport with Workington at Risehow. The culvert is wider than others south of it as it was extended to allow traffic to pass over it to enter and leave the Risehow Colliery and By-Products site. The culvert is built in stone on the seawards side, whereas it is engineered in brick on the landward side. One can see where the culvert was once filled in by the discolouration of the brickwork.

Wigton Railway Station (25th August 2007) - photos by Tom Jenkins

Images of the West Cumbrian railway station of Wigton, Cumbria. Shown in this collection is a surviving latice signal of an LMS design. The signal has a diamond plate attached indicating that the southbound tracks to Workington is track circuited at this location. In a recent email I received in a chat group we were told that the signal was to be replaced. Better to have a few images of it now than leave it too late. The original buildings were removed many years ago and bus shelter type accomadation replaces the old waiting rooms. Shown in this collection are several photos of the rail bridge where it passes over Wigton's Station Road. In the old days the platform stretched over the bridge and continued beyond. Nowadays passengers are told not to walk on it, presumably for safety reasons. Because of the urgency of getting uptodate photos of the latice signal I chose a poor day for taking photos. It was very overcast and I had to switch the automatic flash off for several of the photos or they would have been too dark. Leave it to a sunny day and the signal may have been removed.

Modern Image Railway Photos by Tom Jenkins - Flimby Area

A further collection of modern day photo of the railways of West Cumbria. This time it is images of the Flimby area. There was once a busy Colliery at Flimby with coke ovens and a by products distilation plant. The old station at Flimby like many in the area has been demolished and replaced by bus shelter type protection from the elements. In the 1980s there was a merry go round wagon loading facility at Risehow for sending opencast mined coal from West Cumbria. It was just to the north of Flimby station. The loading facility has been demolished and in this collection are photos of some reminders that there was a very short lived loading depot The footbridge at Flimby was refurbished in 2004 and the job took ages to do. We never saw anyone working on the bridge during the day. It is presumed that the work was done at night when there were no trains running.

Rowrah & Kelton Fell Railway

A collection of images of the Rowrah & Kelton Fell Railway showing an old photo of a Cleator & Workington engine shunting at Sherrif Gate and 21st century photos of the trackbeds and Salter Quarry. The index photo shows Cleator & Workington Junction Railway No.2 a secondhand purchase that was originally named Ennerdale. The nameplates were removed for its introduction onto the C&WJR and it ran nameless except for the last few months on the railway. It was given the nameplates from C&WJR engine No.1, which was known as Rothersyke. No.1 was originaly named Brigham Hill but the nameplates were removed when a six coupled engine was intoduced onto the railway. The new engine took the name of Brigham Hill and the old 0-4-0 was named Rothersyke. When No.1 was sold the Rothersyke nameplates were removed and sometime later fitted on engine No.2. The names of the C&WJR engines has confuses many historians but a notebook found in the former head offices of the C&WJR cleared up the mystery. After the R&KFR was abandoned the Salter Quarry company relaid all the track from Rowrah to Sherrif Gate. Rothersyke was sold off by the C&WJR to a dealer in Workington and was later purchased by the Salter Quarry company. The fact that flatbottom Rail is evedent in the index photo dates the time to be somewhat earlier than the takeover of the old R&KF line by the quarry company.
